Serveru virtualizācija

Server virtualization

In today’s corporate information technology infrastructure a standard practice is to use server virtualization, which enables the company to make more efficient use of physical server resources as well as provides the company with the continuous operation of the necessary IT processes and applications. In a traditional infrastructure each business application is deployed on a single physical server. On the other hand, server virtualization allows you to create completely isolated virtual servers (virtual machines) with, if necessary, different operating systems on one physical server. Creating a virtual machine requires significantly less time, because there is no need to buy a new physical server each time, if the existing infrastructure allows it.

One of the main server virtualization benefit is high availability. If you include a SAN data storage in your infrastructure, data will be placed on this storage, physical servers will perform data processing and ensure application process execution. In case of physical server breaks down, all linked virtual machines will be moved to other servers in high availability cluster. Also, if any of the servers is overloaded, the virtual machines can be “relocated” among physical servers to achieve the most effective use of resources.

Baltijas Informācijas Tehnoloģijas offers server virtualization solution on one of three virtualization platforms: Citrix XenServer, VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Citrix XenServer

Citrix XenServer is a free, open source virtualization platform with full functionality and can provide main functions that are expected from virtualization. Despite the fact that XenServer is an open source platform, Citrix also offers support services which is especially useful in creating complex solutions. One of the benefits of using XenServer is a large open-source community, which is under constant investment and innovation in the development of the platform.

VMware vSphere

VMware vSphere – vSphere is considered to be the market leader in server virtualization field. This platform has the widest functionality, and support more of the other manufacturers’ solutions. It provides a wide range of management capabilities, high availability of business-critical applications and data protection.

Microsoft Hyper-V

Microsoft Hyper-V – Microsoft’s virtualization platform that is integrated in Windows Server installations. Hyper-V has the advantage of the management interface, which is similar to the system administrators in the usual Windows Server interface. Hyper-V is suitable for infrastructures that use Windows Server or Linux operating systems.
