Register of Enterprises of Latvia deploys virtualization services for the data centers

Enterprise Register (RE) of the Republic of Latvia is responsible for the registration of enterprises (companies), merchants, their subsidiaries and representative offices.  In its work with the data, as well as processing and migration thereof, for several years now it deploys virtualization services for various data centers.

Baltijas Informācijas tehnoloģijas is a trusted partner of the Register of Enterprises, who has extensive experience working with the products provided by the leading server virtualization manufacturers (e.g. Microsoft, Citrix and VMware). Our certified technicians are committed to make IT systems migration from the existing server virtualization platform Citrix XenServer to Microsoft Hyper-V

Situation description

Prior to the project implementation in the RE data center virtual servers with different versions of Linux operating systems were powered in parallel with MS Windows Server. XenServer historically has been deployed as a server virtualization platform that provides simultaneous running of multiple virtual machines on the same physical server, thus ensuring their high availability within the data center.

To meet the increased requirements of the Register of Enterprises regarding IT services and computing power and ensure provision of higher availability of services during the data center emergency, in 2013 existing data center was upgraded and a backup center was established. Following the client’s requirements, in the newly established data center HYPER-V was selected as the server virtualization solution.

Solution

In order to simplify the management of virtual infrastructure and enable provision of data replication between the two data centers, it was necessary to migrate XenServer virtual machines to HYPER-V. Upon a thorough process of planning, a new HYPER-V cluster was set up, whereon the existing XenServer virtual machines were migrated using the Disk2Vhd and CloneZilla utilities. We were able to fit into the minimal downtime, respectively 4 hours outside the working time, while maintaining data integrity and consistency between applications and the databases.

Results

Upon successful completion of XenServer virtual machine migration to Hyper-V, the Register of Enterprises can in a uniform way to manage its IT infrastructure, more efficiently use resources of the existing facilities and to provide higher availability of their services. One of the key advantages is the possibility in the future to replicate the virtual servers between the data centers, allowing “survival” in case of emergency situations, when one of the data centers is not operating.

Client speaks

“We highly regard the professional job carried out by the team of Baltijas Informācijas tehnoloģijas, thanks to which our IT infrastructure management works are performed easier and faster. It has enabled the Register of Enterprises to further focus on development and implementation of new services and improvement of the existing, thus securing provision of convenient and efficient services to the public”: says Mārtiņš Štāls, the Head of the Information System Development and Support Division of the Register of Enterprises.
